The old town of Belfort : the old town of Belfort, its rich and varied architecture, its symbolic monuments but also the unique example in France of the second Vauban fortification system dating from the end of the 17th century.
The Lion of Belfort : Lion created by the sculptor Bartholdi, a symbol of Belfort’s victorious resistance during the murderous siege of 1870/1871. “An immense lion, colossal, harried, driven back and terrible in its fury”, is how Bartholdi described the work to commemorate the heroic resistance during the siege.
The little tourist train : From the Place d’Armes, the little tourist train shows you the old town, the town of Belfort and stops in the courtyard of the chateau, where you can admire the old town from its panoramic terrace.
On the trail of lions : Vestiges of the past or architectural elements : come and discover the lion in all his forms – there are over one hundred in the town.
Citadel of Liberty : Visit the citadel by means of the marked trails accompanied by an audio guide and a video-animated show in the very heart of the great underpass. The show comprises panoramic sound and light features combining modernity with local heritage. The visitor is drawn by the magnificent vault, courtesy of Vauban, by the beauty of the light, the impact of the images and the chorus of voices. Images, documents, texts and even excerpts from the film ‘Gladiator’…, no-one can remain unmoved. The Citadel is the doorway to liberty and goes further than its own history to reach the very fibre of each citizen. Visitors learn about events by meeting the characters: Henriette de la Suze, Vauban or Juliette… who bring life to this exceptional space so full of History. In the same vein, an interesting trail especially aimed at younger visitors is available in the form of a quiz through the centuries. Youngsters and their families learn together as they sow the seeds of discovery across the trenches…
