Heritage and culture

The Lion of Belfort

Le lion anglaisA Lion huge and colossal, 'harried, driven back and terrible in its fury'n is how, in 1872, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi described the work that was to commemorate the city's heroic resistance during the 1870-1871 siege.

Made from separate blocks of pink sandstone and assembled against the citadel's limestone cliff, the monument measures 22m long and 11m high. Work commenced in 1875 and did not finish until 1810.

Musée des beaux artsMuseum of modern Art (Donation Maurice Jardot) : located in the heart of the town in an old mansion built at the end of the 19th century, the jardot donation -'an amateur's chamber... a tribute to D.H. Kahnweiler' - houses a prestigious collection of over 100 works from modern artists such as Picasso, Léger ou Braque.

Now visitors may use audio guides free of charge (in english) to discover the works and the life of Maurice Jardot and Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, two key characters in the History of Modern Art.

Museum of Fine Arts is located in the rounded hall situated within Tour 41, a major architectural element of the fortified stronghold designed by Vauban. The fine Arts collections (paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings and decorative art objects) cover a period ranging from the 16th to the 20th centuries.

History Museum of Belfort
is organised around an archaeology collection : images ranging from prehistoric everyday life in the region to the period of invasions, not forgetting the Roman conquests, as well as reminders of the important military characters who defended Belfort on so many occasions.
